Apple enabling default end-to-end encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android users is a major step forward because it finally improves privacy for cross-platform messaging that has historically fallen back to weaker SMS/MMS behavior. With iOS 26.5, encrypted RCS is rolling out for supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages app, with lock indicators showing when encryption is active.

This is important because users should not have to choose security based on which phone their contacts use. High-resolution media, read receipts, typing indicators, and now encryption make RCS a better baseline than SMS, which frankly should have retired before half the internet was born. That said, organizations and users should remember that availability depends on carrier support, device compatibility, and whether both sides are using supported messaging clients. 

For security teams, this is a welcome privacy improvement, but not a replacement for enterprise messaging governance. Encrypted consumer messaging reduces interception risk, but phishing, malicious links, account takeover, device compromise, and social engineering remain very much alive, because attackers, unlike old protocols, keep getting upgrades.


Apple on Monday officially released iOS 26.5 with support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Rich Communication Services (RCS) in beta as part of a "cross-industry effort" to replace traditional SMS with a more secure alternative. To that end, E2EE RCS messaging is rolling out to iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages.
